The sleeping alcove in this Upper West Side studio, 127 West 96th St., #11C, is too small to be converted into a legal bedroom—it’d need to be at least 80 square feet—but having a separate area to sleep in a Manhattan studio is still a huge plus. Other pros include a recent renovation, some preserved prewar details, and tons of natural light. It’s listed for $489,000.

Enter the unit via a foyer large enough for an office area or an entry table. There you’ll also find a deep closet where you can store your coats (and anything else you might want to keep close to the front door).

Walk forward into the living space, a huge room with prewar charm, including beamed ceilings, original trim, and hardwood flooring. As it’s currently staged, it can accommodate a large sectional sofa, a coffee table, two chairs, a desk in the corner, and a small table—all without looking cramped. Large windows usher in tons of sunlight, and beige walls with white trim keep things feeling bright. There’s also a sizable walk-in closet in the corner.

Just off the living area is the sleeping alcove, a good-sized area that can fit a Queen-sized bed and a side table. The bright green on the walls won’t be to everyone’s taste, but that can easily be remedied with a fresh coat of paint. Folks who’d prefer to keep their beds in the living space—or who don’t mind bunking on a pull-out couch every night—can use this room as a dining area or a home office.

The kitchen—which is on the other side of the alcove—was recently redone and now has LG appliances, including a microwave and a dishwasher. Other features include tiled flooring, a decent amount of counter space, and modern-looking, two-toned cabinets—light wood on top and darker wood on the bottom.

The bathroom is a good mix of the old and the new. There’s old-school penny tiles, the unit’s original cast-iron tub (which has been reglazed), as well as a new toilet and a new sink.

The studio is located in a pet-friendly, full-service building with a live-in super, a full-time doorman, on-site laundry, a bike room, and a landscaped garden. Additional storage is available, but you must be wait-listed first. Maintenance is $857 a month. No pieds-à-terre allowed.
