The town of New Canaan sits in Connecticut's Fairfield County, about an hour's train ride from Manhattan. It's a picturesque spot, with beautiful parks, elegant houses, and lots of ponds, rivers, and brooks. There's a charming downtown area full of coffee shops, boutiques, and celebrated restaurants like Elm, which serves upscale American fare, and trattoria Solé.
New Canaan is famously home to the Glass House, a 1948 glass-and-steel-construction designed by modern architect Philip Johnson (who also helped Ludwig Mies van der Rohe design the Seagram Building). Other New Canaan highlights include the 80-acre Grace Farms, which is free and open to the public to explore; the Carriage Barn Art Center, which hosts art exhibitions and classes; and Waveny Park, a rambling 250-acre park.
New Canaan is a famously wealthy town, and the housing here is expensive—according to Zillow, the median listing price is a hefty $1,592,000. Still, there are some slightly lower-priced spots here, including the three-bedroom, four-bath colonial at 834 Valley Rd., now on the market for $849,000. The house (which was recently used as a set for the upcoming Erik Bloomquist film "Intermedium") was built in 1900 and features a number of turn-of-the-century touches, including a covered Ipe wood front porch with room for lounging.
