Dallas, Texas is a changing town. Though its suburbs have long been wealthy Republican holdouts, the 2018 midterms saw a surprising number of local election districts shift from red to blue, and 66 percent of the county voted for challenger U.S. Representative Beto O'Rourke, a Democrat, who ultimately lost to incumbent Senator Ted Cruz.
A number of other Republicans lost their seats, in a defeat that one Dallas Morning News writer called "a take you back to the woodshed kind of whooping."
The swing could in part be attributed to the Lone State's recent population boom—the Dallas/Forth Worth/Arlington area saw a 146,000-person population uptick in 2017 alone.
Dallas has a booming economy, hefty job market, and low wages relative to its cost of living, making it a popular spot for renters and owners priced out of some of the country's more expensive cities. Mild seasons, an eclectic dining and nightlife scene, and inviting neighborhoods only add to Dallas's appeal. If any of that sounds appealing to you, here's a taste of what's out there.
5823 Marquita Ave., M Streets
This four-bedroom, three-bath house, also pictured above, is located in Dallas's hip M Streets area, a section of the Lower Greenville neighborhood that's become very popular with young couples and families, thanks to its relatively low housing costs and restaurants and bars. The house itself has a fireplace in its well-lit living room, a kitchen with a separate island, and a master suite with a massive dressing room and a jetted tub. Other highlights include an outdoor stone patio, grassy front and back yards, and a half-detached garage. The house is priced at $799,000.
1520 Waterside Ct., East Dallas
East Dallas, particularly near White Rock Lake. is another good spot for young families, in part thanks to its proximity to the popular lake/park area, as well as its more affordable housing stock. This three-bedroom, three-bath Colonial was remodeled in 2007, and has high vaulted ceilings, a kitchen outfitted with stainless steel appliances, and both a glass shower and a tub in the master bath. Other highlights include a skylight in the living area and a lovely yard with artificial turf. The house is priced at $499,000.
3812 Hanover St., University Park
If you can swing pricer digs, consider this massive six-bedroom, six-bath property, with a total 5,900 square feet. There are almost too many highlights here to count, though the multiple fireplaces, library, and elegant chef's kitchen are certainly noteworthy. The master suite features a massive glass shower (with seating!) in addition to a tub; there's also a media room, wine room, and a turfed grass backyard. The house is located in Dallas's ritzy University Park neighborhood, which a friend of mine who lives in Dallas described as "an ideal location if you have money to spend," though it's not quite as posh as nearby Highland Park. The house is priced at $1,995,000.
1523 Cedar Hill Ave., East Kessler Park
This four-bedroom, four-bath Monterey-style house in Dallas's East Kessler Park neighborhood features a wood-and-wrought-iron staircase, a well-lit living room with a fireplace, an kitchen with stainless steel appliances and a dining area, and a master suite with a massive shower, tub, and walk-in closet. Other highlights include the Creole-French front balcony, back porch, and gorgeous yard. The neighborhood itself is mainly residential, and known for its large, beautiful yards and eclectic architecture. The house is priced at $795,900.
3421 Hugo Pl., Uptown
Folks in search of nightlife and walk-ability might like Uptown, a thriving spot just north of Downtown Dallas. Uptown is described as a "work-live-play" neighborhood, thanks to its heavy concentration of office buildings, in addition to trendy restaurants and bars. It's also Dallas's most walkable neighborhood, an upside for recent Manhattanite transplants. If that sounds appealing, consider this two-bedroom, three-bath corner unit in an Uptown townhouse, complete with an open concept kitchen/dining/living room, gorgeous master suite, and private terrace with a view. The unit is priced at $625,000.
